The Eritrean Development Foundation (EDF)
is an independent, non-governmental
organization (NGO) dedicated to supporting reconstruction and development of
Eritrea, Africa's newest nation. EDF's objectives include reducing poverty
and human suffering, expanding educational opportunities, improving health
care and agricultural services. EDF work in cooperation with Eritrean
agencies, organizations, and community groups to support projects. EDF
supports projects in the sectors of agriculture, health, and education, with
a particular emphasis on the development of human resources within these.
EDF is also responding to the humanitarian crisis that has resulted from the
war with Ethiopia. International agencies estimate that half a million people
are in need of assistance, with 280,000 displaced (150,000 of whom are living in
temporary camps) due to fighting, 68,000 expelled to Eritrea while their
property estimated at $800 million is confiscated, and another 200,000 whose
communities have been severely disrupted due to the influx of the displaced.
EDF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, charitable organization. Contributions made out
to EDF are tax deductible.
